چکیده

1. Abstract We describe some of our recent work on the dynamics of ux tubes in the solar convection zone. We focus on two topics, the rst being the orientation (\tilt") of active regions, and how comparisons between observations of tilt and tilts computed from numerical simulations of ux tubes can be used to infer properties of magnetic elds deep in the solar interior. The second topic is an investigation of the kink instability of twisted ux tubes in the solar interior, and its possible relationship with are-productive spot regions. 2. Introduction Much of our research has focused on studying how magnetic ux emerges from the base of the solar convection zone, where the solar cycle dynamo is believed to operate, to the surface of the sun, where the eeects of magnetic

Magnetic helicity and flux tube dynamics in the solar convection zone: Comparisons between observation and theory

[1] Magnetic helicity, a conserved topological parameter in ideal MHD systems, conditions close to which are realized in the solar plasma, is intimately connected to the creation and subsequent dynamics of magnetic flux tubes in the solar interior. It can therefore be used as a tool to probe such dynamics. In this paper we show how photospheric observations of magnetic helicity of isolated magn...

Magnetic flux tubes inside the sun*

Bipolar magnetic active regions are the largest concentrations of magnetic flux on the Sun. In this paper, the properties of active regions are investigated in terms of the dynamics of magnetic flux tubes which emerge from the base of the solar convection zone, where the solar cycle dynamo is believed to operate, to the photosphere. Flux tube dynamics are computed with the ‘‘thin flux tube’’ ap...

Dynamics of magnetic flux tubes in close binary stars II. Nonlinear evolution and surface distributions

Observations of magnetically active close binaries with orbital periods of a few days reveal the existence of starspots at preferred longitudes (with respect to the direction of the companion star). We numerically investigate the non-linear dynamics and evolution of magnetic flux tubes in the convection zone of a fast-rotating component of a close binary system and explore whether the tidal eff...

Kinematic active region formation in a three-dimensional solar dynamo model

We propose a phenomenological technique for modelling the emergence of active regions within a three-dimensional, kinematic dynamo framework. By imposing localized velocity perturbations, we create emergent flux tubes out of toroidal magnetic field at the base of the convection zone, leading to the eruption of active regions at the solar surface. The velocity perturbations are calibrated to rep...

Solar surface emerging flux regions: a comparative study of radiative MHD modeling and Hinode SOT observations

We present results from numerical modeling of emerging flux regions on the solar surface. The modeling was carried out by means of 3D radiative MHD simulations of the rise of buoyant magnetic flux tubes through the convection zone and into the photosphere. Due to the strong stratification of the convection zone, the rise results in a lateral expansion of the tube into a magnetic sheet, which ac...
